Sept 7, 14, 21 6:30-8:30 pm

Instructor: Julie Kurtz

Description:

Trauma-Responsive and Resilience-Building Practices for Young Children provides an overview on the neurobiology of trauma, the impact of toxic stress on a child and adult and introduces the science of neuroplasticity and resilience. Participants will walk away understanding the difference between a challenging behavior and trauma trigger. The training will guide early child parents and caregivers working with children ages 3-10 to understand trauma as well as its impact on young children’s brains, behavior, learning, and development. The training introduces a range of trauma-responsive and resilience building practices they can use immediately to create strength-based environments that support children’s health, healing, and resiliency.

Julie Kurtz is an author, national speaker and expert consulting and training internationally on trauma-responsive and resilience building strategies. She has over 30 years of experience working with youth, adults and families who have experienced trauma and toxic stress.

She is a co-author of:

  1. Trauma-Informed Practices for Early Childhood Educators: Relationship-Based Approaches that Support Healing and Build Resilience in Young Children 

  2. Culturally Responsive Self-Care for Early Childhood Educators 

  3. Trauma-Responsive Practices for Early Childhood Leaders: Creating and Sustaining Healing Engaged Organizations 

  4. Trauma-Responsive Family Engagement in Early Childhood: Practices for Equity and Resilience 

  5. Understanding My Brain: Becoming Human(E)! (Ages 5-10)

 

Julie Kurtz is the creator of the phone/tablet Application (APP) Trigger Stop: Sensory and Emotional Check-In designed specifically for children ages 3-8 years to promote sensory and emotional literacy and to support self-regulation.

 

In 2011, she was named as one of the most 100 Influential Women of Silicon Valley by the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal.

 

Julie has provided keynotes and training on trauma-responsive and resilience building and social-emotional for programs small to large across the nation.

 

Julie is also a licensed marriage family therapist providing counseling in the Bay Area and throughout California.

Course Description for Smoke & Mirrors (CSEC)

More than three in four teens say their parents and caregivers cannot find out what they are doing online. This session opens adults’ eyes to how their children are unwittingly putting themselves in danger. Join Dr. Deena Graves as she walks us through what we need to keep children and youth safe online. This training will cover:

 

  • Discussion of predators, specifically online predators

  • How youth may be endangering themselves (knowingly or unknowingly) online

  • How youth hide their online activity

  • How social media is used for grooming and recruiting

  • "Sextortion" - what it means and what to do about it

  • Online bullying - what it is and what to do about it
